The inmates housed at ADC-Varner Supermax located at State Hwy in Gould, AR are placed according to their custody level determined by a number of factors including the past criminal history and the length of their sentence. There are ample educational and vocational training programs for all inmates, especially ones that show a willingness to learn new things that will prepare them for a better life when they are released.
The mission is to promote and prepare the offender to leave in better shape than when they arrived, giving them the best chance to never come back and thus lower the state's recidivism rate. The Varner Unit is a high-security state prison for adult male inmates of the Arkansas Department of Correction located in Lincoln County. The prison can house over 1, prisoners, and it includes a bed supermax Super Maximum Security facility. The supermax and non-supermax facilities are separate from one another.
The Supermax unit also houses inmates scheduled for execution in Arkansas, currently performed by lethal injection. The actual executions take place at the nearby Cummins Unit. The female death row is located at the McPherson Unit. Varner is one of the state's "parent units" for male prisoners; it serves as one of several units of initial assignment for processed male prisoners.
Inmate Telephone - Inmates are provided with coinless telephones during set hours of use. Inmates can only make collect calls to pre-approved numbers. Inmates cannot have cellular phones or calling cards. Inmates can lose their telephone privileges for disciplinary reasons. Each unit has its own telephone policy, so please check with the particular unit for specific hours of use.
Tobacco Policy - Inmates are not allowed to have any kind of tobacco. Visitors and employees must leave all tobacco products in their vehicle. Bringing tobacco products into a facility will result in loss of visitation privileges. Synthetic Drugs - Synthetic drugs are known by numerous names Spice, bath salts, K2, and Molly to name a few , and are legally sold in the community as incense or other products "not meant for human consumption" but have an alternate use to produce a high similar to that felt when using marijuana, amphetamines or LSD.
The problem is that each batch of these drugs contains different chemicals meaning each batch can produce different effects some of which can be life-threatening. Each week, inmates can place an order at the prison commissary where they can buy things like food, clothing, stationary, stamps, and electronics.
This method requires a credit or debit card, and it does have a processing fee. Prepaid cards and payroll cards are not accepted. Box Pine Bluff, AR GED classes are offered at Varner Unit and the Board of Correction requires anyone without a GED or high school diploma to attend classes unless they are unable to participate due to health reasons.
Mental health classes are offered to the inmate population to address anger control, criminal behavior, and criminal thinking in an effort to reduce recidivism and decrease criminal behavior. The PAL Program is faith-based and includes worship services, religious materials, and counseling services to all inmates within the ADC who wish to participate. Inmates can sign up for the voluntary Think Legacy Program when they are between six and 18 months from their release date.
This is a job skills training program developed and managed by Riverside Vo-Tech and funded through the Department of Workforce Education.

Guards, for the most part are ok. Just doing their job. Of course there's always an exception or 2. Idk about the library and such. I do know my loved one has requested friends and family have books sent to them so I'm guessing the library is somewhat lacking.
