The other 6 assassins contribute to recharge speed if I'm not mistaken. But as a rule of thumb, send 6 assassins on missions to get money and leave the other 6 for yourself. In the city they can jump from above, run out of alleys, climb from below or ride on horses.

After they kill guards, they retreat. You can't retreat from Romulus Lairs. Per page: 15 30 Recruiting these assassins is pretty straightforward.

As you make your way through the streets of Rome, you will hear cries for help, much like the original Assassin's Creed's saving citizens. Upon approaching the scene, you will find a citizen surrounded by guards, you will then have the option to help this person in the fight that starts as you walk up or leave and find another recruit. If you successfully join the fight and save the citizen, they will be in your debt and join you as an assassin the Brotherhood.

To customize and improve your recruits, head to an assassin's tower former Borgia strongholds or pigeon coops. At these places you will have the option to allot skill points to armor and weapons, and customize your recruit's outfit.

Assassin recruits earn experience with everything they do. Call in a recruit to assassinate a target and earn a handful of experience points. Send a recruit on a successful contract mission for even more experience. As recruits level up, you can spend experience bonuses to improve their skills, making them more powerful in combat.

When a recruit reaches the maximum level, visit Ezio's hideout on Tiber Island for a ceremony scene that promotes the recruit to a real assassin. Once you've got some recruits, you'll notice red bars that appear under Ezio's health bar in the upper-left corner of the screen. You can build up to three red bars, and each bar represents an assassin recruit attack that you can call.
